Homemade holiday goodies part 4: chocolate covered bacon

This, my friends, is bacon. Bacon that’s been pan fried into submission, bathed in a warm, delightful puddle of dark chocolate, and drizzled with luscious peanut butter, creamy white chocolate, or salted caramel.

Since we’ve already been through that whole incident where I put bacon into my donuts, as well as the time I snuck it into cupcakes, I don’t really feel the need to convince you that this is a good idea. I think you know that it is.

This chocolate covered bacon marks the final installment of my homemade holiday goody series. I really hope that you guys have all enjoyed oogling these goodies as much as I have enjoyed eating small quantities of each, then dividing the rest amongst the five recipients, hoping they will never know they would have gotten a lot more if I wasn’t so damn hungry all the time.

Except that now they all know because they all read my blog. So really, I’m fucked.

Sorry guys. Enjoy your meager rations.

By now, I’m sure you’re all on the edge of your seat waiting to hear who the winner of this box of goodies was. I am pleased to announce that after putting all of those who commented and were Facebook fans into a spreadsheet, then using random.org to choose a random number from that spreadsheet, the fabulous Lacey Williams won the giveaway. Lacey is the author of the food blog Thyme on My Side (I’m particularly swooning over these vegetable dumplingsshe made) and luckily for my shipping budget, a resident of Austin, Texas.

I know what you’re thinking. But I swear I did not rig this to save shipping costs. If I was going to rig it, I would have won.

The fact that Lacey won was super cool, because I got to go drop off her package in person and meet her and her boyfriend, who gave me a Christmas Homebrew that I cannot wait to sample. So really… I win.

Here’s a full shot of the loot given to my college roommates and our lucky winner, Lacey. Homemade hot cocoa mix, homemade marshmallows, sugar & spice nuts, chocolate covered bacon, homemade highlighting cheek tint, a cookie cutter, and one of my fours designs of homemade cards. Because no Christmas gift is complete without a little dose of inappropriate.

Chocolate Covered Bacon

  • 1 pack bacon, cooked crisp and cooled
  • 4 oz dark chocolate
  • 1 Tbsp shortening
  • 2 Tbsp peanut butter (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp white chocolate (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp salted caramel (optional)

Boil water in a small or medium saucepan. Place a heat-safe bowl on top of the saucepan and melt the chocolate and shortening together. Using a spoon, coat all sides of the bacon with chocolate. Set on a sheet of wax paper to dry. If desired, melt the white chocolate, peanut butter, and/or caramel and drizzle over the slices of chocolate covered bacon. Move to refrigerator to harden for at least 20 min. Enjoy!
